Malcolm Arnold Biography
Sir Malcolm Arnold is considered to be one of Britain's most underestimated and yet most popular composers. He wrote scores to over a hundred films including, Whistle Down the Wind, Hobson's Choice and the Oscar-winning, Bridge Over the River Kwai. Sir Malcolm wrote the music and main theme for the film, The Belles of St Trinians and also composed ballets, symphonies and operas, all of which are highly regarded by lovers of classical music and critics alike. Sir Malcolm is also well known to rock fans, having collaborated with Deep Purple on their groundbreaking, Concerto For Group And Orchestra project, which was filmed and recorded at the Royal Albert Hall in 1969.
In later years Sir Malcolm’s health declined and he suffered from mental illness. Awarded a CBE in 1970, he became Sir Malcolm Arnold in 1993. Every year in October there is a Malcolm Arnold festival held in his honour at his birthplace of Northampton.
