Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich Biography
Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich is a Russian composer. During his lifetime he achieved fame under Trotsky’s chief of Staff, but his music was officially denounced by the Russian regime twice, and was occasionally banned. Despite this however, he was prolific and wrote fifteen symphonies and six concertos as well as two operas and a substantial amount of music for film.
Shostakovich’s final ten years were plagued by ill health although he continued to compose. He wrote his fourteenth symphony in 1969, which was dedicated to his friend Benjamin Britten who conducted the piece, when it was premiered in the west at the Aldeburgh Festival.
Shostakovich died in August 1975.
