Dreams of Tall Buildings Biography
dreams of Tall buildings formed at the end of 1999. They began recording sound textures from their environments and surroundings. They stress that they are not restricted to the red tape of the conformed and structured norms of being an x piece. d0Tb flicker between the both senses of sound and vision, they swan dive into atmospheric and tempestuous epics that bleed through collages of samples and organic treatments. They furrow through harsh minimalist noise that tests the listener’s patience to the limit. using found sounds, manipulated tape, brittle guitars, grand pianos, percussive typewriters and a broken web of shattered loops of sine waves that implode into complex songs with off-kilter time signatures. This is then delivered to you in beautiful hand-made packaging.
Throughout their history together doTb (Darren Joyce and Justin Wiggan) have, in their expansive body of work, sorted meaning into noise, and organized sound and the architecture of space. They physiologically respond to neural processes in unwanted sounds and noise pollution during their collaborations, beating out found samples as psychological reflections of their subconscious, which at times are wired together through a practiced incubation period, with the intention of cultivating new sound scapes. doTb can block, distort or change/interfere with the meaning of a message in their music so don't look for one. This demarcation problem in the philosophy of their work draws the lines around the boundaries that are commonly drawn between art and music.
After over a decade of dialogue between the artists doTb are flickering between both senses of sound and vision, Dreams of tall buildings swan dive into atmospheric and tempestuous epics that bleed through collages of samples and organic treatments. They furrow through harsh minimalist noise that test the listener’s patience to the limit. Combinations of guitars, grand pianos, percussive typewriters and a broken web of shattered loops and electronic sine waves that fire and implode into complex textures and unusual time signatures stabbing your ears with plunderphonic organised chaos.
Initial explorations led to the release of a series of limited tapes and CD-Rs in hand made packaging involving branded wooden sleeves and hospital specimen bags. They avoid becoming slaves to genre by having a doctrine as evolving as their sound constructions themselves. Their sound ranges from minimal microwaves, breathing and non-notes (A Red Carpet For Autumn) to hideously distorted trumpets and string loops sounding like Miles Davis stabbing Stan Getz in a floatation tank (14 Months). Other tracks are created using one source: Remember The Words is compiled from video samples and surface noise with a Chinese text and children singing in the chorus; and in Museum samples from room ambience and art works from the Birmingham Museum are looped with grating metal violins to create a twisted clockwork piece in a classic pop arrangement, which closes on its self as soon as it opens.
For their latest collaboration doTb have teamed up with award-winning Arve Henriksen from Supersilent on a 15min piece called Rope Prts I,II & III and a 20min piece called Drowning the heart sounds released through their Museum label in 2010.
