Hawkwind Biography

Hawkwind was formed in 1969 being part of the Ladbroke Grove artistic community.  The band first appeared as Group X or Hawkwind Zoo, before finally shortening the name to Hawkwind and securing a recording deal with Liberty Records. Dave Brock, a former busker led the band and whilst many other members have come and gone over its thirty six year existence, Dave remains in sole command.  Hawkwind blazed a trail for what became known as Space Rock, initially building up an underground following by appearing free at many high profile events, most notably the Isle Of Wight Festival of 1970,  where  Jimi Hendrix even came to check them out.  Many of these free concerts were also performed with the Pink Fairies, who often joined Hawkwind on stage where the resulting jam would turn into a performance by Pinkwind.

Lemmy is perhaps the most famous former member of the band, although Bob Calvert, Simon House and Nick Turner also contributed greatly to the sound and image.  Hawkwind enjoyed massive success both here and in America during the seventies with hit singles like ‘Silver Machine’ and albums such as ‘Space Ritual' and ‘Quark Strangeness And Charm’.  At the end of the seventies they managed to almost reinvent themselves briefly as the Hawklords, before reverting back to Hawkwind for the eighties and beyond.

During the eighties the band consolidated the reputation they built up in the seventies and at one point former Cream drummer Ginger Baker was a member.

Considered to be the ultimate Space Rock band, Hawkwind are still led by Dave Brock, celebrating their fortieth anniversary in 2009. The band still record albums and also release “Official Bootleg” CDs and DVDs to a large and dedicated fan base, who rather like Hawkwind, show no sign of abating.
