Vanilla Fudge Biography

Vanilla Fudge is an American band that first came to prominence in 1967, subsequently recording a number of albums until they split in 1970.  The band also enjoyed success in the American singles chart with a slowed down arrangement of the Supremes hit You Keep Me Hangin’ On.

Formed by keyboardist Mark Stein and bassist Tim Bogert along with rhythm section Carmine Appice, the final member was guitarist Vince Martell.  The band, who were enamoured of The Beatles, also covered Ticket To Ride and Eleanor Rigby.  Both recordings were apparently thought of favourably by The Beatles. Vanilla Fudge were criticised by some for merely being a ‘covers band.’  The members, however, were more than capable of writing their own material and were talented arrangers with the success of the various covers illustrating this.

The band split for the first time in 1970, with Tim and Carmine forming the hard-rock outfit Cactus, before reappearing in 1972 with Jeff Beck in, Beck Bogert and Appice. This super-group, however, only managed to record one official studio album with a live album released only in Japan.

Following the break-up of Beck, Bogert and Appice, Tim and Carmine followed their own routes before re-forming Vanilla Fudge in 1982. There have been other reunions since then, which have seen the band recording and playing concerts.
